SPAID Information

Knowledge is key to better health.

We created the chart above to help families understand the probabilities of different pairings producing certain traits. Please note: being a Single Carrier or Double Carrier does not mean a dog will develop SPAID. It indicates that the dog carries the gene(s) that may increase the risk of developing symptoms. Many carriers never show signs, but they do have a higher probability than non-carriers.

What is SPAID?

SPAID (Shar-Pei Auto-Inflammatory Disease, also known as Shar-Pei Fever) is a genetic autoimmune disorder that causes recurring fevers and inflammation. If untreated over time, it can lead to kidney and liver damage. Stress can trigger episodes, and affected dogs may develop amyloid deposits in their organs. Not all dogs with SPAID develop amyloidosis, but repeated fevers are a warning sign of potential kidney disease and early health risks.

Treatment: Dogs diagnosed with SPAID are often prescribed Colchicine to manage symptoms.
