Let’s Talk Shar Pei Sizes! Toy, Miniature & Standard
One question I get asked quite often is, “How big will my Shar Pei get?”
And right behind that one is, “How much do the different sizes weigh?”
If you’ve been around Shar Pei for a while, you already know there is quite a bit of discussion about size. Some families want a larger, more substantial Pei, while others are specifically looking for a smaller one. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with having a preference!
So let’s talk about the different sizes, because there are a few things I want families to understand before choosing their next wrinkly family member. 💙
What Are the Different Shar Pei Sizes?
Shar Pei are commonly described in three size categories: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. These are the general measurements I use when discussing the different sizes with families.
Toy Shar Pei
Toy Shar Pei generally measure around 10–14 inches tall at the shoulder and average approximately 25–35 pounds.
Miniature Shar Pei
Miniature Shar Pei generally measure around 15–17 inches tall at the shoulder and average approximately 35–45 pounds.
Standard Shar Pei
Standard Shar Pei generally measure 18 inches and up at the shoulder, with many weighing 50 pounds or more.
Now, before somebody asks me why their dog weighs more or less than these numbers, remember that these are averages! Just like people, dogs come in different shapes and builds. Some are stockier, some have a larger frame, and some are just naturally smaller.
Why Do We Go By Height Instead of Weight?
This is something I explain to families all the time.
When discussing these size categories, height tells us more than weight alone.
You can have two Shar Pei that weigh the same but look completely different in size. One may be shorter and stockier, while the other is taller with a different build.
Height is measured from the ground to the top of the shoulder, also called the withers. So when you’re trying to figure out which size category a dog falls into, you can’t just look at the number on the scale.
And remember, puppies are still growing! Even when we know the parents’ sizes, we can give families an idea of what to expect, but we can’t promise an exact adult height or weight.
Are Toy and Miniature Shar Pei Purebred?
Yes! A Shar Pei can be purebred without fitting into the standard size used for conformation showing.
Smaller Shar Pei are generally produced by breeding smaller dogs over multiple generations. The goal is to maintain that smaller size while continuing to produce healthy dogs with the characteristics we love about the breed.
Here’s where it’s important to understand the difference: Toy and Miniature are size descriptions, not separate varieties officially recognized by the AKC. The AKC Chinese Shar-Pei breed standard describes the standard breed size, so a dog outside that standard may not qualify for conformation showing.
That doesn’t change the fact that a dog can be purebred. It simply means the dog doesn’t fit the size requirements of the show standard.
Of course, size should never be the only thing a breeder focuses on. Health, temperament, sound structure, and responsible breeding decisions matter just as much.
Why Do Some Families Prefer a Smaller Shar Pei?
I get it! Not every family wants a 50- or 60-pound dog, and not every home or lifestyle is the same.
Some families specifically ask me about Toy and Miniature Shar Pei because they want a smaller companion. Here are a few reasons I can understand why:
- Leash walking: A smaller dog may be easier to physically manage, especially for someone who struggles with a larger, stronger dog.
- Smaller homes and apartments: Some families simply prefer a more compact dog for their living space.
- Older adults and retirees: A smaller dog may be easier to handle during everyday activities, particularly for someone who has difficulty lifting or controlling a larger dog.
- Traveling: Depending on the vehicle and travel arrangements, a smaller dog can be easier to accommodate.
- Everyday life: Getting a dog into the car, helping them onto an examination table, or handling them when needed can be easier when you’re not dealing with a larger dog.
- Personal preference: And sometimes, people just LOVE the smaller look!
One thing I always want families to remember, though, is that smaller doesn’t automatically mean easier. Training, personality, and temperament make a big difference, too. A little dog can still have a whole lot of attitude! 😂
And if you know Shar Pei, you know they are perfectly capable of having opinions about just about everything.
So, Which Size Is Best?
My answer? That depends on you!
Some families love a big, chunky Standard Shar Pei. Others want a smaller Toy or Miniature. The important thing is finding a dog that fits your family, your home, and your lifestyle.
Do your homework, ask questions, learn about the parents, and talk openly with your breeder about the size you’re hoping for.
And please remember that no matter how carefully a litter is planned, genetics can surprise us. We can discuss expected size based on the parents and their lines, but no one can guarantee exactly how big a puppy will be as an adult.
At the end of the day, we’re talking about a living, breathing member of your family, not a particular number on a scale.
Whether you love them big, little, or somewhere in between, there’s just something about those wrinkles, that personality, and the way a Shar Pei works their way into your heart. 💙
Now I want to hear from you!
Are you a Toy, Miniature, or Standard Shar Pei person? And if you already have one, how tall and how much does your Pei weigh?
